On January 1st, I posted my 2020 goals. Now today, September 1st I am posting my goals update for the month of August. August was a bit rough for me. My mental health started going downhill and writing became harder and harder for me to do. For this reason, I made the decision to take September off from graduate school and put my focus on my mental health and on the writing that matters most to me. So hopefully that will help improve my mental health and get my writing back on track! But for now, here is the update on all my goals for the month of August!
1. Write 500 words a day: For the month of August I changed up my approach to my daily writing, so 500 words wasn’t the goal per se. For the month of September, I am going to be sticking with the method from August to see if it works better. As of right now my only goal is to write and see progress. The word count doesn’t matter as much as the progress right now.
2. Learn or try something new every month: For the month of August I tried a new writing system for myself, a color coded writing schedule to be exact. Curious about it? You can read about it here!
3. One post a week: Thanks to all my planning and having blog posts prepared for the next few months, I was able to meet this goal with no issues! However, I have noticed that I have run low on posts, so I am working hard on getting more posts written and scheduled. I am hoping to have enough posts to make it through until the end of October, but we’ll have to see if that’s possible or not!
4. Finally finish a draft of a novel: Honestly, I am having a lot of internal struggle over my novel. Recently I came across previous drafts and ideas I had with it and now I’m confused on what direction to take. So for now, I think I’m going to put my effort into another writing another novel and come back to this one with fresh eyes. So I will still be working on a novel, just not the one I’ve been working on since January.
So August proved to be a bit rough, but I’m feeling better going into September. I feel like I have a plan, have my goals in mind, and the motivation to make September the best month possible.
How did August go for you? Did you knock your goals out of the park? Or did you goals knock you on your butt? I hope everyone is staying safe! Have a great week everyone!
Those are some great writing goals, and here’s to wishing you finish your first draft soon! I myself don’t have many goals, but I do write every day, and I feel like all’s good if I have that done. All the best with yours!

It sounds as if taking the time off from grad school should help get you back on an even keel. As for my August, my day job and my writing life are in a battle royale going into September.

That’s my hope. And oh no, I hate when that happens! Best of luck in getting the balance back!
