My New Thing I Tried In July: Baking

I am not my mother or either of my grandmothers. These three ladies are/were amazing at cooking and baking… two things that until a year ago I had no experience with. In some ways, I rejected the idea of learning those two skills because I felt like learning to do those things would mean I was destined to be a “happy little housewife”, which is a life I never imagined for myself. Also, my mother used to yell at me to get out of her kitchen, so that also made it hard to learn either of those skills. But I never saw a reason to learn those skills, which shows just how young and naive I was! Because when I moved out last year, I moved out with little to no knowledge of how to cook. But luckily, I’ve learned to cook some things since then!

But until a few days ago, I had never attempted to bake anything. But then one night after watching an episode of Chopped, I got a craving for these cinnamon sugar pastries that my Nana and my mom would make. So the next day I called my mom and asked her what the recipe to make them was. I knew how to do the filling, but not how to make the dough. So she told me, I got the ingredients, and one day I decided to make them.

Well my first attempt went horribly. My mother told me to eyeball the ingredients and that there were no exact measurements, forgetting to mention some important things in regards to the ingredients. So short version is- The first batch of dough didn’t come out well. I couldn’t save it of make it work. It just ended up being a pile of beige cement. And I ended up having a break down over it (but that’s a post for my anxiety blog).

So after a repurchase of most of the ingredients, I decided to go for round two. I was a lot more careful and patient this time. And success! I was able to get the dough right and make them. Below is a photo of the cinnamon pastries (or doughy things as my Nana called them) before I put them in the oven!

And here are the after photos! They cooked well and they were delicious! Between myself, my fiancee, and his brother, they only lasted one day after I made them. I will be making more in the future. And at least now I can say that I know how to bake something!

So what is something you have recently baked? Or what is your most disastrous baking story? I would love to know! Have a great week everyone!

  1. Nice job! I recently experimented with dates as a sugar replacement in gluten free chocolate chip cookies made with almond and cashew butter. 🙂

    • That sounds amazing and super delicious! Would you happen to have the recipe on your blog? I would love to try to make and them myself!

I’ve recently gone vegetarian for health reasons and just bought a cookbook to help find new recipes I can make!

  2. I haven’t posted to my blog yet, but I did share a rough outline in another one of my creative spaces: https://vsco.co/bekkah/journal/date-paste-brekkie-cake

I’m trying to get better about providing more thorough recipes. For this one, I figured out after posting that I actually prefer almond butter. The good thing is that dates tend to come in decent quantities, so it’s fun to play around with it a bit.
